National Volunteer Week Activities

National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate and thank BC’s volunteers. Our annual photo contest showcases volunteers and helps tell the story of the importance of volunteers in BC.

Volunteer Engagement Manual
(Formerly: How to Start a Centre)

This manual offers a step by step guide on how to start a volunteer centre. We are updating it to include information on the rights and responsibilities of a volunteer, latest tools/resources on volunteer engagement, skills needed to be a great volunteer, and health benefits of volunteering. If you are interested in starting a volunteer centre in your community, get in touch.

Volunteer Futures Conference

Annual 2-day event with inspiring keynote addresses, practical workshops and opportunities to network. Anyone interested in learning about volunteerism is welcome to attend.

Information & Communications Program

BC State of Volunteering Report

The Report captures a picture of the state of volunteering in BC and provides examples of quality volunteering programs from volunteer centres around the province, and identifies trends.

Member and General Public Communications

Our Connector newsletter offers the latest news on volunteerism and up to date news on broader voluntary sector info such as education, training and funding.

Education, Training & Capacity Building Programs


Delivers and hosts workshops and seminars on a variety of topics across the province. We offer a mix of in-person “road shows” and online webinars.
Most requested topics:

  • Rights & responsibilities of a volunteer
  • Volunteer screening options to protect children and vulnerable adults
  • Managing risk when volunteering with children and vulnerable adults and
  • Measuring return on investment in volunteer programs

Culturally Welcoming Volunteer Program

Program benefits new immigrants by finding ways to be engaged in their community, learn new skills, gain “Canadian” experience and help improve the quality of life in their community more effectively.

Listing of educational opportunities for anyone who is interested in learning more about volunteering and volunteer training in BC. Find a training event or post one.

Advocacy & Leadership

Leader in the volunteer sector and is active on several key issues in BC. Participates in many networks and works with other national and regional organizations.

Volunteerism Advisory Services

Provides consulting on issues around volunteerism and quality volunteer management.

Delivers and facilitates regional meetings to discuss issues, find ways to collaborate and connect with others in their region.

Assists and provides advice to many struggling/emerging volunteer centres as well as to people and communities interesting in establishing a volunteer centre.
